Aligned Collagen and Bioglass Threads

Abstract:
An electrochemical fabrication method was employed to synthesize bioglass-incorporated electrochemically aligned collagen threads that are compositionally similar to native bone. Bioglass can be successfully incorporated within the collagen/bioglass threads without disturbing collagen fibril alignment. Bioglass incorporation significantly increased the ultimate tensile stress and modulus of the threads.
Extensive mineralization of the aligned collagen/bioglass threads demonstrate bone bioactivity and viability for development of an osteoconductive material for bone tissue engineering applications.
