Hydrogel Kinetics of Aging Collagen

Hydrogel Kinetics of Aging Collagen

06/12/19

Fully understanding the shelf life of collagen is critical for ensuring consistency and reproducibility in research. We tested the effects of time on the gelation kinetics of PureCol® Type I Collagen (#5005) using an ElastoSens rheometer.

Briefly, 5 lots of collagen within a 3 year manufacturing window were pulled. All product had been stored at 2-8°C at pH 2. Testing was performed 1 year after most recent lot had been produced.

Results indicate that overal gel stiffness does not significantly decline, but the rate at which the collagen polymerizes does. It is important to note that though the gelation rate declines, the "aged" collagen results are still within required specifications for product functionality.
